Song Analysis Handout - Example Song Included "Lift Every Voice and Sing"

Use this song analysis handout with students to critically think about a song and its lyrics, while reinforcing the elements of close reading and literature. The song anaylsis worksheet is blank and can be used with any song, but the song "Life Every Voice and Sing" (AKA The Black National Anthem) is included. I've used this handout in English and Social Studies classes grades 7-12, but it could probably be used with lower grades also.

The Great Gatsby Kill and Run ch 7 activity: music and art

Students read, annotate, and connect the lyrics of Sia's "Kill and Run" from the 2013 film soundtrack to the end of chapter 7. As they do, they'll better understand the complexities of Myrtle's death including who shoulders the blame and what her death symbolizes. This also includes a scaffolding activity to decode symbols in the novel, specifically the Eyes of T. J. Eckleburg. You can use this as an assessment at the end of chapter 7. Writing Song Lyrics: The Patchwork Quilt method

This is a super easy activity from your perspective as a teacher, and a fun little project for students. It's much like the concept of "Blackout poetry" but students will use song lyrics instead. From a list of 35 songs (on the handout) they will choose 2 lyrics from ~10 of the songs and then write their "own" song around those lyrics. This takes the pressure off of the daunting task of just writing a 100% original song, and it also challenges the students to make meanings and connections amo

Well, that's just not true. :) Or what about when U2 gets MLK's time of death wrong? Yeah, there are tons are lyrics out there that are just lies. This is a soft brain-stretching trivia activity for your students. It's an organized handout with 20 lyrics excerpted from songs. Have them jot down what they believe is the inaccuracy/untruth.

After giving them a couple listens through the song, ask them to share what they think the words are--in full class or in small groups. Then you can read (or sing!) through the song as you say the correct lyrics (provided). If you love using
