Description
Do you sometimes get a physical reaction when you hear powerful music? Goosebumps or a wave-like feeling under your skin? There's a name for that, and there are fascinating biological ways that music affects your brain.
In this 12 slide presentation and 15 question multiple choice google form, you'll share songs with students to see what kind of responses they get. Just click through the embedded music files and have them jot down any feelings as they listen.
Next you'll give them the scientific term and definition, as well as other provided related notes.
Then students will watch a brief YouTube Video (linked) where WIRED's Peter Rubin looks at how music can change our moods, why we get the chills, and how it can actually change pathways in our brains.
As they watch the video (on their own or as a full class) have them answer the close listening multiple choice guide that I made to accompany the video. Answer key provided of course! This component of my resource is great to keep students actively listening/reading.
I'm also including a link to a related article--students could read and discuss, or you could use as an additional reader response assignment.
Finally, you can continue this lesson by having students click on the linked list of other songs that are said to produce the most "effect," and then you can ask students to share their own favorite powerful songs.
