Teaching Percent with Practice Problems and Answers

Learning the concept of percentage can be confusing, especially to students who are challenged by the language in word problems. For example, if a student doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “ratio,” then he will likely be frustrated by the process it represents even though he has strong math skills. Every effort should be made to “translate” words into numbers, and sentences into equations, so that students can match words with mathematical processes. Use the Teaching Tips and Follow-up

Divisibility Tests

Testing numbers for divisibility by small numbers like 9 and 11 are part of standard math curricula in many countries. These tests are often taught as rules to be blindly followed and even teachers have no idea why they work. This document is a series of activities through which students are convinced about the validity of the tests and also gain an understanding of why they work. The approach does not use formal proofs but uses a pre-algebraic technique which convinces most students about the v
