One of my favorite and most worthwhile activities!
Wonderful document for recording family facts and memories. This is a culture assignment that will be treasured for who knows how long. I hand out as extra credit, but I strongly encourage their use... where else will this information ever be captured? Students just ask questions of parents and grandparents. Even better, have them video the conversation.

Reading For Life: Cooking and Recipes
This teaching unit focuses on teaching both information text and independent living skills. The unit is broken down into five sections.

Help students practice mindfulness while eating. This guided organizational chart helps students focus all of their senses on what they are experiencing while cooking and eating food. This is a middle school cultural project that we use as a culminating activity to end my semester with a Family and Consumer Science/Social Studies collaborative project. They need to be able to bake/cook something related to their country while demonstrating their kitchen skills.

Gender Roles Worksheet
Students might tell you that a lot of their teachers want to discus differences in gender roles, but this worksheet will still make them think, and you sometimes have to talk about it, especially as those roles change in society and the stories reflecting society.

Analyzing Canadian Food
In this two-page assignment, students are given a list of Canadian foods. They are required to select one of the foods, describe the food and what it looks like, and explain which province or territory the food is found in. There is also a simple map activity that involves colouring and labelling. Students are then required to analyze their food item using Canada's Food Guide.
