Students will create a courtroom and decide how King John will be remembered in history. I have successfully used this lesson with students in 3rd thru 12th grade. Additional activities are suggested.

The 800th anniversary of Magna Carta makes it even more important than ever that students understand its meaning to democratic governments around the world. Reading or presenting this short skit engages students with some of Magna Carta’s most enduring concepts and introduces its key players. Meant to reinforce understanding and familiarize students with the events of June15, 1215, this humorous send-up shows what could have happened in that field outside of London. A humorous look at the precursors to the Spanish Armada, focusing upon Philip 2nd's many grievances against Elizabeth I. The focus is upon entertainment (of the school/parents) although there is plenty of educational information behind the jokes. This is a word document including a list of characters, a narration framework and 5 separate scenes. In all there are 22 roles within the assembly but this may be increased or decreased by splitting or combining pieces of narration or having different

Written for AP European History, but can be used for any Middle Ages study. Your students will have a blast learning how the Catholic Church began losing power during the late Middle Ages. Various ideas for using this play include: (1) students can work in small groups of 4 and practice reading through each scene; (2) the entire class can put on the play; (3) small groups can act out individual scenes and compete to see which small group acts it out the best; or (4) students can write a one

Charlemagne: Thank you letter from Pope Leo III

This lesson uses the R.A.F.T. principle---Role, audience, format, topic. The students take on the role of Pope Leo III inviting Charlemagne to join him on Christmas day to receive the Holy Roman crown. I included a sample of student work that is fabulous. Personally, this lesson even helped ME ( THE TEACHER!) develop a better understanding of Charlemagne's significance.
