The Hundred Years War - Socratic Seminar - Common Core Aligned
This Socratic Seminar allows teachers to have students focus on broad themes and undercurrents that surrounded the events of the The Hundred Years War. By providing teachers and students with the option to cover overarching discussion points, such discussions allow for more breadth than a typical Socratic Seminar, but still give teachers the option of selecting specific text excerpts for inclusion in the seminar as well. In this way, the discussion works more as a Thematic Seminar.

"A Framework for Teaching a European Unit"
This is a 7-page unit proposal that I created as a district framework for teaching European history and culture.
It takes a different perspective on teaching social studies, but one that is both research-based and very engaging. The approach to teaching is a "top-down" perspective that focuses upon uncovering major themes and strands, instead of memorizing dates and events. (Which are soon forgotten!)
It is a unit FRAMEWORK and NOT a complete unit with detailed lesson plans.

Overview
The following set of reflective responses is designed to accompany student study and analysis of specific events that occurred during the Middle Ages. Over the course of studying this time period, the teacher will assign students to complete a series of reflective responses that examine how central issues and themes concerning the church, the crusades, the black plague, the Hundred Years war and political changes shaped events during the Middle Ages.
