Great Leads and Endings
In order to help my students with their narrative leads and endings, I created this reference sheet for them to keep in their notebooks or writing folders. The leads came from published books in our classroom library. The endings all begin with "AS" and were created by my students.

This is a black and white writing booklet. It uses 4 sheets of paper which, when printed ON BOTH SIDES, fold in half horizontally to make a journal with 7 pages for illustrations above 7 pages of writing lines (7 writing lines per page.)
IMPORTANT NOTE!!! These pages are numbered to come out of your printer in the CORRECT ORDER FOR FOLDING, but will not print in standard 1-7 order. It is easiest not to shuffle them as they come out of the printer. Just print ON BOTH SIDES, fold, and staple.

Metacognitive Markers
Metacognitive Markers is a tool I like to use to ensure close reading of texts. I tell my students at the beginning of the year that taking meta markers is mandatory, and by the time October rolls around, they're doing it without me asking. Meta Markers ensure that students are following along with the text and allow students to make notes to themselves which makes it easier when they begin writing their papers.

Brilliant Beginnings
Students will create a fold the flap resource for their notebooks. Examples and descriptions of each type of beginning are included. Students then cut and fold back the flaps to write a beginning of each type for their own stories. Example beginnings were created from the book Piggie Pie by Margie Palantini.

Planning organisors 5 Ws of story writing-who, what when, where and why
I use this organiser with my 3rd-4th class (8-10 year olds) when writing stories. They plan their stories by filling in the 5 Ws before writing their final draft. I find they usually fill in few words in each box but it helps organise their ideas before writing stories.

Writing Strategy Bookmark
This resource is a great tool for students to refer to for their writing strategy. Assign students a writing strategy and hold students accountable for having this bookmark out in front of them during Writing Workshop. Each page includes two strategy bookmarks featuring three squares where strategies can be written on post-its.
