The Steps for Defining a Word Using Context Clues

Oftentimes when teaching context clues, we simply teach students to look at the sentence the word is contained in to figure out the definition. However, in my 17 years of teaching, I realized this method doesn't really help kiddos out. Thus, I decided to create a process that would effectively help kids come up with meanings without relying on the dictionary. I've been using this method in my classroom for a couple of years now, and it has really proved helpful.

FSA Reading Sheet

I created this FSA Foldable to use when my students complete their Achieve3000 articles or other FSA style reading articles. It outlines the three elements of the FSA Reading Test: Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge. I had my students examine their prior year's FSA scores to determine what areas they needed to improve in. Then, I used this sheet to help them understand what those types of sections look like and how to understand them better. It is printed ou
