This song is great for Black Heritage Month, a unit on Identity, MLK Day, and preterite and imperfect identification. Students will watch the video, read the lyrics, identify preterite and imperfect verbs, then they will answer a series of questions which will guide them through understanding the song. Last they will answer some personal questions and make connections to their lives. This will take more than one class period unless you have block scheduleing.

Celebrate the birthday of a great American, Martin Luther King, Jr.. Students will learn facts about Dr. King and learn to compose new lyrics to a familiar tune. This cross curricular activity can be extended and expanded to include lessons on notation and harmony. Add instruments and a little choreography and you have a new favorite.

The corresponding questions relate to course content like symbolism, theme, figurative language, direct text evidence, allusion, and the Civil Rights Movement.The formatting may look a little wonky on a Word Document.I recommend putting this on a GoogleDoc and setting it to "pageless."
