To pre-teach this worksheet, play a sample or two of gospel music like "Roll Jordan Roll" or "Wade into the Water". Then using this worksheet, have the students compare this "modern" song to those of the past. After using this journal exercise, students can work in small groups to compare their findings/opinions.

The corresponding questions relate to course content like symbolism, theme, figurative language, direct text evidence, allusion, and the Civil Rights Movement. The formatting may look a little wonky on a Word Document.I recommend putting this on a GoogleDoc and setting it to "pageless."

In the book, she recounts the day Martin's friends from across the street said that they could no longer play together.
