Octopus Paper Dissection

Biology Buff
Here is the latest installment of my paper animal dissections which are becoming popular these days for different reasons. Even thought the octopus isn't a standard animal that is dissected in Biology classrooms, it could be dissected in Marine Bio and AP Bio. Advanced 8th grade science and regular Biology classrooms could also do this activity as an added-on activity when doing the frog or fetal pig for comparison, when learning about classification and the different classes in the animal kin

DNA Transcription Simulation - Google Classroom - Distance Learning

I had to create this on the fly when the flash animation simulation I've been using for YEARS quit working on our student computers. This is a quick DNA simulation where students work from a single strand of DNA to fill in the complimentary DNA, mRNA, tRNA and subsequent Amino Acid to create the gene for Cystic Fibrosis. This product is made in Google Slides. Students will type in the bases that match each codon. There is an amino acid table included. I use this simulation with my Basic Biotech

Evolution Game

My 8th graders love this printable evolution game that we play as a class. They get to use their creativity to explore why certain organism survive and others do not. The game is played through rounds in which certain traits are good or not depending on the circumstances. Those who go extinct can come back as a modified version of a surviving student's organism. I have not yet had a class get bored with this activity and the ending round is always fun- what happens when humans come along. :)

Morning News Reporter Form

This language arts form is a great way to start the day! It's also a good way to give kids a chance to orally report something to their classmates. This brief form allows the student to fill out information for the "radio station"--which is your room number. The information includes date, temperature, and big news of the day. The students can either use a thermometer you have in the room that shows outside temperature, or they can check using the computer. I find even the children who are so shy

Penny Lab - Surface Tension

The Penny Lab is a classic experiment designed to explore the concept of surface tension, the property of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force. In this experiment, you will place a penny on a flat surface and slowly add water one drop at a time. You will soon see a bubble start to form on top of the penny. The key observation in the Penny Lab is the number of water droplets that can be added before the spillage occurs. This number reflects the strength of the surface tension of the

Students explore the two interactives, complete a data chart, and then using the information from both charts answer analysis questions. It's great for substitute days, as an introduction to visible spectrum, or as a homework or independent assignment. Also great for students who miss your in class hands on activity, or for students who need more practice with the concept.
