Olaudah Equiano Fishbowl Discussion
In this product, students will analyze a Olaudah Equiano's narrative of his life prior to enslavement, during the middle passage, and during enslavement. In this product, students are broken into small groups to analyze specific excerpts and answer questions that force them to use analytical reading to answer each inquiry. Following small group analysis, students will use a fishbowl discussion to discuss what they learned.

The books I chose were intended for an audience of secondary students. The thematic unit covers the themes of fairness, morality, and ethical responsibilities. I have included summaries of each book as well as comments of why I believe they would be a good choice. Included are three different projects that would work with any of the books chosen. This is a terrific lesson for cross curriculum opportunities and/or team teaching.

Analyze the types of conflict faced characters in any story (see "Types of Conflict Presentation." Fill out the first page of G.O. together, using three different types of conflict and reminding students how to cite where they found the supportive quotes. In pairs, have students complete the rest of the activity. For honors students, they could complete as homework throughout a week or use during reading circles.
