I love getting my class outdoors, and an outdoor math lesson early in the year is a great way to set the attitude towards maths for the rest of the year. I usually run this lesson in the second week of the school year, as our first ‘formal’ maths lesson.
I ask the students to work in pairs so I can with their interactions, and I take observational notes about the way the different groups approach each of the tasks, how often they ask for assistance, if they use complex thinking, etc.
