Social Justice Research Project - Distance Learning
This research can be done at home or at school. It focuses on social justice issues so that students can find what they are passionate about and learn how to effectively inform or persuade others to care about it as well. I have included an "ideal" teaching guide as well as how I taught it during the hybrid model. This is the project and the rubric for the project. There is a letter to the editor, creating media (either through a blog or other resource), and creating a PSA. This engages students in civic issues and can be paired with lessons or books surrounding social issues. These documents have instructions, resources, examples, and the rubric.

This essay asks students to consider what rights they think students should have in school and respond in the form of a letter. It includes the assignment, planning pages, and a six-trait rubric. This project works well as an extension activity for reading the book After by Francine Prose. I've used this assignment to differentiate for lower level readers in my 9-12th grade civics class.
