This assignment walks students through the process of understanding a prompt, developing a position, writing claims, and identifying relevant evidence. You can easily use this template and create new prompts -- I complete this activity with my students 2-3 times before writing an argument essay so they can internalize the process of critically thinking through a prompt before responding.Depending

Distance Learning! Evaluating Bias in Nonfiction Texts

Special Note:This unit was developed when schools closed in the spring of 2020. Throughout our district, most students had access to technology, but we also needed to provide hard-copy packets to be delivered to students without technology access. This unit guide includes detailed directions and documents for both sets of students. The lessons are grouped to be “dropped” into an online classroom program (i.e. Google Classroom) once per week, but lessons can easily be adapted and supplemented for

Literature Alive
This was the first project I did with my juniors when we switched to remote learning and it was a hit! My students reported that they'd be interested in doing a debate project, so I wrote up some prompts (some based on Tiger King, aliens, and other topics I thought high schoolers would be interested in) and they crafted their debate. This project can be done in virtual classes (like I did) or students can pre-record their debates.
