I do a mini-lesson with my students to review fiction vs. nonfiction. Students then record their knowledge on the fiction vs. Nonfiction sheet. At each table I have a mixture of fiction and nonfiction books. Students go back to their tables look through the books and write the titles on in the fiction or nonfiction box on the sort those books side.

These book club or library club permission slips are a great way to keep track of club membership. It is also a good way to protect yourself from any liability issues, so I recommend keeping the signed forms in a file drawer. This looks best in color, but black and white is just as effective.

This Microsoft Publisher file includes tabs for different sections of the notebook (I printed them off on colored paper) and nametag covers for each student's notebook. We put together our notebooks on the first day of school. It's a fun project that will help them be organized in English class the rest of the year! Instructions: Glue or tape the ends of the tabs on 1 page about every 20 pages in a standard 100 page composition notebook. Glue or tape the nametag to the front.
