By middle school, students should begin to develop skills in analyzing author craft. One of the easiest ways to introduce kids to the "craft moves" an author makes is through teaching characterization. The reality is that kids already understand this literary term on some level because they unconsciously pick up on all of the clues that an author or a text (be it book, movie, music video, or tv show) provides the audience. Following Directions Test
This activity makes students perform close reading skills by following directions. This activity takes 5 minutes. Hand out the worksheet face down. Tell them they have five minutes to complete the test. The purpose of this test is to leave a lasting impact on students as to why they need to read all directions first. Storyboard Template
One of the best ways for students to review or process information is to storyboard it. The storyboard method has students pick the 6 most memorable scenes and quotes from a reading. They then draw the scene (much like in film making) and accompany it with a direct quote from the reading.
Storyboard-ing helps students figure out what is the most important information from a reading. The storyboards can also be used as a study tool later on.
