This is a good project to bring in real life models to review geometry as well as measurement for perimeter and area. I use this closer to the end of the year and give students multiple weeks to finish assignment. You can also modify this by changing some of the requirements for special education students as well as add more challenging skills required for those higher students.

FUN DATA! "Pencil Bouncers" {A Data & Graphing FREEBIE}

"Pencil Bouncers" is one complete data and graphing activity that's fun and engaging. It's one of my FUN DATA! activities, in which students collect, represent, and interpret data in fun ways!In "Pencil Bouncers," students work with partners to bounce a pencil off the floor from different heights. They record the data in a table, represent the data with a bar graph, and then answer questions and interpret the data. Who knew an ordinary pencil could lead to all of that?This resource includes the

This worksheets meets Common Core Standard 5.MD.5.b (see below). Students are asked to find the volume of various real-life rectangular prisms. Some problems are simple and only require students to plug the dimensions into the formula V = l × w × h. Other problems require students to find the volume of irregularly-shaped items using water displacement. Standards: Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. 5.MD.5 Relate volume

Capacity Man (gallons, quarts, pints, & cups) is an interactive math tool in which students may see for themselves how the 4 customary/standard US liquid measurements are related. As students cut each section out (before gluing), they can lay the 4 quarts, 8 pints, and 16 cups on top of the gallon square and see how they are related. Students in 3rd - 5th grade have enjoyed this activity for many years. Directions are included. Currently saved as a PowerPoint, I have yet to try it out on a

The original volume of water in the graduated cylinder is measured, the swimmer races over to the graduated cylinder and jumps into the water, the water level rises, and the new volume of the water is measured. The subtraction of the two numbers is shown, along with the results.Note - It is also part of my bundled packages of lesson

Surface Area

This activity guides the learner in finding the surface area of a 3-D object (cube). TLW classifies the 3-D object by labeling its edges, faces, and vertices. Then, given dimensions and a visual representation of the net of a cube, TLW calculate the area of each face and sum the total for the cube's surface area. I use this resource as an interactive math journal activity for my alternate middle school math class, but it can be used as differentiated notes, quiz, or for reinforcement or review.
