I use "Dear John" and "Would've Could've Should've" to practice annotating, pulling out close reading and word-level details to prove a theme. Annotations include: allusion, metaphor, imagery, syntax, shifts, etcI broke down the analysis into evidence, analysis of evidence, and analysis towards theme.

This lesson uses two songs - Umbrella by Rhianna and Everything She Does is Magic by The Police. Students compare/contrast the symbol of the umbrella in both songs and attribute it to how it relates to the relationship between Rose and Troy in Fences.
