Graphing Motion: Tortoise and the Hare

Created by
John Reinhold
This resource is intended to introduce students to the concept of creating distance vs. time graphs and interpreting them for information such as direction traveled relative to the observe and relative speed. The materials required for this activity are a stopwatch, yardstick or measuring tape, and pieces of clay. This activity can be completed in groups of 3 or as an entire class. The activity ranges from 30 to 45 minutes.

Density Column Worksheet

Students will:Calculate densityPredict how different fluids interact based on their densityCheck their predictions by analyzing a class demonstrationExtensions:Add different small objects (ex: marble, nail, paperclip - whatever fits!) and have students predict where the object will settle based on its relative densityHave students explore a digital density simulation like this one: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/density/latest/density_en.htmlMake it a lab! Have students create their own den

Hands-On Understanding of Square Roots: Cubes & Making Squares

Created by
Darl Rassi
This simple, hands-on activity has students count out a given number of unit cubes and then asks them to build a square from the cubes. Then, they record the length of the square. Students repeat this process with different numbers of cubes and record the information in a graph and a table. They also are asked to write a rule to describe the relationship between the number of cubes and the length of the square. I've found that this activity helps students better understand the idea of the sq

STEM hands-on learning. Middle school students love it !! Powerpoint step-by-step directions to build an inclined plane using Legos. Students build using the "Simple and Motorized Mechanisms Base Set W991756" available through Lego Education. Lever, pulleys, gears & friction powerpoints and scientific method experiment packets for each also available. All experiments use the same Lego Base Set W991756.

Insane Alchemist
An engaging two part lab containing 2 levels of labs for your Earth Science, Environmental Science, or inclusion class! This combines one of my Chemistry 1 metal oxide labs with a new mechanical weathering lab. The follow up analytical questions are geared towards common core mathematics modeling concepts. NGSS, State and Common Core standards are all presented. The first page is background information. It is written for an inclusion classroom and actually replaces our textbook. It gives all t

Demystifying Density: Differentiated Density Labs for Grades 6-9

These five labs allow a teacher to provide differentiated labs for middle school students at different levels of instruction. The labs are differentiated based on students' understanding of density and on the mathematical calculations needed to compute volume. The labs use common materials that are readily available in science classrooms or through science supply catalogs. The labs could also be used as differentiated formative or summative assessment.

Whatever floats your boat - demonstrate how math helps us in real-life tasks

Created by
Shawn Fowers
This activity can be used to teach practical applications of everything from early algebra through Calculus. Students will be tasked with building a boat out of aluminum foil to see how many pennies can be held. The mathematics behind the buoyancy of the boat is then discussed and the activity repeated to see quantifiably how much an understanding of mathematics helps us accomplish tasks in the real world.

The Mathematics Of Pandemics/COVID-19

Created by
The Stat Lady
Harness the power of math to understand the spread of viruses like COVID-19. Students will make graphs and write exponential equations in order to better understand the impact of social distancing. This is a Word Document so that you can edit it to customize it for yourself as needed. Since this is a free resource, it would be wonderful if you wrote me a positive review and follow me in lieu of payment. Constructive feedback always welcome.
