The graphic organizer provided serves multiple purposes! In addition to having students sort, it asks for specific text evidence which shows a particular memoir element and it asks students why that memoir element is so important for the reader overall. Harlem Renaissance Work Stations

Created by
Lori Weybright
I like to begin this unit with clips from the Cotton Club and short documentaries on the Harlem Renaissance Movement. Playing music from this era really establishes the mood of this period. There are 8 work stations, each takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. I put students into groups of 4-5. I explain how to do each work station before they begin. The students sit with their groups and I give each group one of the folders. While they work, I circulate around the room to assist.

Students read the left side and draw a picture of the state bird, nut, etc. on the other. The last page reads "What else makes Georgia special? I live here!" The students draw their own home in this space. Great for ESL Kindergarten, First, or Second grade!
