Primary GATE -- AIR! Active, Creative, Academic, and Hands-on!

I am always trying to figure out what to do with my little primary groups, and this unit was a definite hit with my kindergartners. It would work well with 1st grade too or the regular 2nd grade classroom. The full unit contains more than 2 hours of contact time. It’s active, fun, and challenging for these little ones and seemed to have the right combination of “get up and move,” imagination, creativity, and “making” along with academic tasks. We learn about four important properties of air

Our kindergarten curriculum is Foss Science. We have to teach a unit on trees. I made these 7 activity sheets to align with my learning centers. Each sheet also aligns with the goals/expectations of the Foss science tree unit, but they can really go along with any tree unit. Each sheet is hands-on and requires learners to think about how trees grow, their different parts, what they need to grow, and how they change throughout the seasons.

These are the stations that we use during the 1st week in October to teach fire safety. The students love moving around from station to station and learning by "doing." We also use our 9 1 1 and town fire department phone # in stations for them to understand and remember their importance. Some videos we use in the lessons are a nice addition too. The students do this throughout the week for 2 class periods.

During Transportation Week, the Virginia Lee Burton book, CHOO CHOO, can be read aloud. The book, like her other books, educates readers about different forms of transportation with wonderfully sweet characters. Following the book, teachers can take objects from the kitchen area (stove/oven, a pot, a toy piece of coal, a pitcher of water) and explain how heating the water below the coal makes the coal cook. By cooking the coal, steam is created and it is used to make energy, thereby forcing the

Importance of learning science

Learning science is particularly important for students as it equips them with the essential knowledge and skills to make sense of the world around them. Science education is not just about memorizing facts. It fosters critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving abilities. These skills are not only useful in school but also in everyday life beyond the classroom.

Benefits of learning science

Learning science offers many benefits to students both in school and beyond. In fact, it helps students:

  • Question the world around them and seek evidence-based explanations
  • Cultivate their ability to observe, experiment, and analyze data
  • Nurture a sense of curiosity, awe, and wonder about the natural world
  • Understand natural phenomena and the laws that govern the universe

With a solid foundation in science, teachers can help empower students to think critically, solve problems, make informed decisions, and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways.

Teaching with science resources

One of the best parts about science class is all of the possibilities for hands-on, collaborative learning! Think: labs, experiments, inquiry-based activities, and design challenges. These activities encourage students to explore scientific concepts by observing, asking questions, and conducting investigations. Additionally, with small group centers, students can engage in group experiments, discussions, and projects that require them to collaborate, share ideas, and solve problems together.
