Resistance to Reconstruction: Sharecropping, KKK, Jim Crow Laws

Engaging History
I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. It is very informative and great for class discussion afterwards and linking to modern times.

I love this activity and the students do as well, it is a great opportunity for them to sink their teeth into politics a little bit and it oftentimes has the side effect of having my students pay more attention to politics. It is a great lesson to use when you have to do something mandated for Constitution Day, as it covers the political process. This les
