I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. This is a Black History Biography project which required my students to create a new cereal based on the life on a famous African American. The students had to design a cereal box to tell the story of the person they chose. They had to include things like a cereal name that relates to the person, a picture of the person, a timeline of the person's life, character traits of the person, and a written report of the biography they read about the person. My own students had a blast with this project.
