AP Lit Prose Essay Prompt on The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin

This is an AP Lit prose essay prompt on "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. This is a great prompt because it is asking what is only implied, which students have difficultly identifying in a short story like "The Story of an Hour" since nothing is directly stated in the story. The students have a hard time identifying what is implied in the story, which I find is a great teaching opportunity.I have included my annotations of the story as well as an outline. Please refer to the new grading

This is a complete unit on Much Ado about Nothing for the AP Lit and Comp class.I start the unit by introducing the literary terms we will be focusing on during the unit. There are instructions on how students will complete an annotated glossary for the literary terms and they will then be assessed on the literary terms after completing the unit. I have provided an example of the what the literary terms test format is (feel free to edit the terms to fit the class needs). I have also provided m

My students seem to find writing the introduction and the conclusion of an essay the most challenging. This paper has them practice writing just those...and not the essay that goes with it. There is a paper with directions and details. Then there are two graphic organizer pages that allows them to practice writing three introductions and the conclusions that go with them.

I gathered multiple open topic/literary argument prompts from released AP Lit exams and created a quick way for students to analyze the prompts. In this activity students are required to read the prompt, identify the literary element the prompt is addressing (I provide students with a "cheat sheet" that lists the different types of elements the AP exam expects students to know, such as plot, setting, character traits, point of view, style, and theme), identify a novel or play they could use to

I used the two poems "The Flea" and "The Apparition" by John Donne to assess my AP Lit students on Tone and intent. This is also a great practice for students when the AP Lit exam has them compare two poems for the poetry essay vs. one poem. I have included my annotations of the poems.I reformatted the 2019 College Board essay rubrics so they can be minimized or copied back to back to fit on one page instead of three.https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/AP-Lit-and-Comp-2019-Reformatted-

I had my AP Lit students keep an ongoing annotated glossary of literary terms throughout the year. This helped them not only identify the terms needed for the AP exam but it also helped them understand the importance of them within a passage or poem. What I felt helped students the most with this activity was that it lends itself to teaching students how to write strong paragraphs using the “three C’s” which are explained in the activity. I would have my students highlight each element of the "

Topic Sentences

I taught middle and high school social studies for 18 years, during which time I also taught expository, academic writing. This was a really handy tool. I would usually ask for a volunteer to do the first one (so the whole class could hear an example), and then, I'd ask the class to complete the remaining practice sentences on their own, then discuss with a partner and make any necessary corrections, and then share out at the end with the entire class. My student's topic sentences in essays a

Essay Structure Outlining - Using all 5 senses! (Pineapple Approach)

When was the last time you tasted a lesson?? This is the ONLY total sensory approach to structuring an essay. There are two main problems facing most students writers today. First of all, too many write their entire essay in the introduction and then merely repeat themselves in the body! Second of all, even though some are able to communicate, very few KNOW to even EXPECT a structure, much less know what the academic language of that structure is. Teachers face two problems as well: writin

I Use this with my 12th grade AP Economics classes usually the first week of school. This would also work great with any AP or Honors Government or Civics class.Great tool to bring up some good discussions for an icebreaker activity. Also works well as an assessment tool for their writing skills. Great for getting to know your students and for them to know you as well since usually I'm at least semi-involved in the discussion as well.
