AP Lit and Comp Tone Assignments

This is a complete unit I teach near the beginning of the semester with my AP Lit and Comp class. I think it is very important for students to be able to recognize tone before they move on to more difficult literary devices.

This unit includes:

• Assignment 1: Group assignment on creating tone
• Assignment 2: Complementary tones (students will look at passages and poems to identify complementary tones)
• Answer key for assignment 2
• Assignment 3: Shifting/Contrasting tones (students will look at passages and poems to identify shifting/contrasting tones)
• Answer key for assignment 3
• Assignment 4: Assessment on complementary and shifting/contrasting tones (students look at passages and poems to identify tones)
• Answer key for assignment 4
• AP Level essay prompt on tone (students will analyze two poems "The Apparition" and "The Flea" by John Donne
• My annotations of the poems
• Rubric to score the essay
