Christmas Rhythm Sort & Ostinato Composition

Students can work alone or with a partner to create spooky rhythms. They can perform them for their class! Students need to think of something having to do with Halloween (skull, bat, skeleton, jack-o-lantern) and think of the rhythm it makes (ex- "skull" = quarter note). This worksheet I created, is a fun way for students to practice their treble clef note recognition. Each student must recognize where each note falls on the staff and create the word below. The Hanging Tree: Relating the Past & the Present
This is a follow exercise for correlating gospel and slave narrative songs to the "The Hanging Tree" song from the hit movie "Mockingjay". To pre-teach this worksheet, play a sample or two of gospel music like "Roll Jordan Roll" or "Wade into the Water". Then using this worksheet, have the students compare this "modern" song to those of the past. After using this journal exercise, students can work in small groups to compare their findings/opinions.
