Exploring Nature: STEM / STEAM Outdoor Investigation - What it Takes To Survive

Your kids will explore structures and their functions as they take a close look at plants and animals that are found right outside their home or school. They'll learn from a very young girl in Ecuador how, like her, they can be real citizen-scientists in their communities. They will plan and investigate, hands-on, what is needed for a seed to sprout and grow. In the process they will naturally apply math and measurement, learn to isolate and test variables, and analyze and interpret their own da

STEM/STEAM Backyard Data - Thinking Critically & Interpreting - Lesson 18

Students use a fun ancient art and applied math to gather and interpret baseline data on the plants living just outside the door. They solve the real-life Mystery of the Dead Birds using deductive reasoning, on-line research, and critical thinking. Your kids then turn to their own collected weather and biodiversity data. They graph, analyze, and interpret patterns to reach conclusions about how their local weather affects their neighborhood plants and animals. All lesson plans, printables, prese

Dark, Dark Room Mystery – STEM Investigation Remote Ready Lesson K

This keep-it-secret lesson engages your students with a mysterious ghostly apparition in a very dark room… in essence using the properties of light to create a model: a giant, room-sized human eyeball and proto-camera right before their very eyes! But, SHHHH, don’t tell them that! Instead, present them with this mystery either in your own room or with our video, guiding them as variables are isolated and changed to figure out what is going on. This lesson sets the stage for students’ creating an

Tinkering to Build a Simple Camera – STEM Engineering Remote-Ready Lesson L

This lesson is a wonderful engineering, problem-solving experience, ideal for a science center, as it can go on for many iterations. Once students have an idea of what is going on with the giant camera obscura (see previous Lesson K – In a Dark, Dark Room), they collaborate to design their own handheld, dark rooms (cameras) and tinker as long as you want with various iterations of their designs. As your students adjust their designs, they will isolate variables, note causes and effects, and rais
