I'm sure I'm not alone in having a grade school education that largely avoided issues of racial injustice. Sure, we learned about slavery, but nothing about persisting injustices. In light of current events, it is especially important that even young learners have exposure to concepts like discrimination, privilege, and racial justice. Model United Nations Unit Templates
I created this Model UN unit for Grade 6 Social Studies. After introducing Model United Nations (MUN) to my students, I arranged students into member state groups (eg. India, Belgium, etc). I based this unit on two themes: water and refugees. I led a lesson on an issue in Canada (eg. Canadian boiled water advisories in First Nation communities) and then set students off in their groups for the next few days to research water problems in their own member states.
