This is a lesson for persuasive writing that uses William & Mary's Hamburger Model. I took Lesson 10 from the Beyond Words unit and created it into an interactive SmartBoard lesson for students. Students will move objects, erase to reveal, underline sentences, and learn how this powerful graphic organizer can help them write powerful persuasive pieces!

This Unit incorporates the use of literature as inspiration for writing our personal narrative. It's created for a 2nd or 3rd grade Personal Narrative writing Unit.
Each day requires:
*reading a book
*teacher models a graphic organizer
*students complete their own organizer
*short paragraphs written for each organizer

Habitats Research Organizer
This is a 6 page organizer for students to use as they research a habitat of their choice. It is great for younger grades (1st-3rd). I created it as a smartboard to use as a model and then printed the pages directly from there. This project can be topped off with students creating a biome at home to then bring in and share with the class. Students loved it and did a great job with it!

Expository Essay
This smart lesson walks students through what an expository essay is and what makes a great paper! It is an interactive and very engaging lesson that is easy to follow. Expository Research 5-Paragraph Essay SMART Response Assessment
After learning the components of a 5-paragraph essay, students can take this as a formative assessment to show the teacher that they are ready to submit their final draft. If students do not do well with it, the teacher can see what they may need to revisit and revise, before students are finished with the final product. Answer Key is embedded in the document.

Expository Research Unit Smart Response Clicker Quiz
This item works with the Smart Response System for Smart Boards and can be used at the end of a research unit. Broad Yet Distinct Main Ideas
A SmartBoard Lesson that helps students create main ideas that are precise and not so broad. It teaches them to see the difference between a good idea that can have specific details as opposed a broad idea that is hard to create specific details for.

Step by Step Theme Essay In Groups
Students will read the picture book Pink and Say. Once the story is complete students will be taken step by step throughout the process of writing an essay. Each individual step will be discussed and reviewed starting with a thesis statement to the final draft. Instruction will allowed for differentiation based on needs and abilities. Students can then show their ability to write an essay by working on their own based on the novel of their choice.

Shape Based Compare and Contrast Graphic Organizer SmartBoard Template
This SmartBoard Template supports student use of my shape based compare and contrast graphic organizer. The strategy works well for students who can't use a typical Venn Diagram. Writing Process Notebook/Posters
This is a great resource to hang up on your Writing Wall, use as a tool in student toolkits, or just as a focused mini lesson on your expectations on the rules and routines of the writing process.
This is in Smart Notebook format, however I have loved to use them in mini-form as a tool for my students, or I have printed them out and hung them on my writing wall.
