A Paragraph is Like a Cheeseburger
This is a fun creative thinking/writing lesson that will help students build a clear understanding of the parts of a paragraph and can extend to the parts of an essay using an analogy between paragraphs and cheeseburgers. It would also be a fun review for paragraph writing.

Cause and Effect
This is a short lesson on Cause and Effect. The first two pages are a short story and answer page.
The following pages involve 5 cause and effect sentences, which the students will either fill in the cause or effect for each. For example, a picture is provided of two babies (one crying, one laughing). The sentences reads, "Mom wanted to take their picture..." This would be the cause, the students will have to write the effect.

Opinion Writing - Understanding Parts of a Paper Dog Autopsy Activity
THE STUDENTS GET TO IMAGINE THAT THEIR DOG HAS JUST EATEN THEIR HOMEWORK. THEY TAKE IT TO A VETERINARIAN TO GET THE HOMEWORK OUT. THE VETERINARIAN ASKS THE STUDENT TO ASSIST THEM WITH GETTING THE PAPER OUT. STUDENTS THEN STICK THEIR HANDS INSIDE THE DOGS STOMACH (32 OUNCE YOGURT CONTAINERS, OR CONTAINERS OF EQUAL SIZE) AND PULL OUT DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PAPER, AND MUST PUT THEM TOGETHER. Informational Research Report Smartboard
This 7 day lesson for the smartboard has 52 slides. There is a rubric and an anchor piece. I wrote this to go with the ReadyGen Unit5 Grade 2 Module B Text Pioneers to the West. That is what my anchor peice is on. This unit can be used with grades 2, 3, or 4. The essay has an introduction, 3 supporting paragraphs with topic sentences and a closing. Step by Step Theme Essay In Groups
Students will read the picture book Pink and Say. Once the story is complete students will be taken step by step throughout the process of writing an essay. Each individual step will be discussed and reviewed starting with a thesis statement to the final draft. Instruction will allowed for differentiation based on needs and abilities. Students can then show their ability to write an essay by working on their own based on the novel of their choice.
