Before teaching plate tectonics, volcanoes, or earthquakes, I helped my students identify with convergent, divergent and lateral plate movement by turning it into a love song/poem.

Making Poetry Fun: Teaching symbolism through song
It is important to relate to reluctant learners and find ways to teach them at their level, engaging their interests.
This lesson teaches students about symbolism through both poetry and song. I provide lyrics for the two songs I used with the lesson, but audio, if desired, will have to be obtained separately. An added bonus (I hope) to using popular songs is that students will hear them outside of the classroom and be reminded of what they learned.
