Analyzing Pixar Shorts
Students learn to notice and note rhetorical devices and intended arguments through screen grabs from popular Pixar shorts, Presto (2008) and Day and Night (2010). Students work in groups to identify techniques and make arguments.

Edgar Allan Poe Horror Scene - Creative Digital Narrative
This Digital Storytelling Unit is designed to be completed over the course of three to four weeks. Students, working in teams of three to four, will explore core curricular content and be required to make an engaging and creative short video about that content. This Digital Storytelling unit is part of a larger initiative called Meridian Stories (www.meridianstories.com).

Valentine's Day English
We use Valentine’s Day as a stimulus for improving our speaking skills and our writing to argue skills. Includes differentiated activities to help students improve their arguing techniques, organization, planning, tone and more. A fantastically detailed and differentiated lesson that can be adapted for other texts and age groups. Useful particularly for Grade 6, 7 and 8 English classes but a lot of fun for Grade 9 and Grade 10 classes preparing for English assessments too!

Presentation Rubric
Speaking and presenting in an English classroom are essential skills that need to be practiced and assessed regularly. Here is my rubric that I use to assess students' presentations for my high school ELA classes. I use proficiency marks, not letter grades, but it's a google file, so you can easily edit to your own needs. It's pretty easy to use during the presentation and also allows me to give them feedback as an audience member as well. Let me know what you think.
