How to Make Papel Picado (Day of the Dead, Halloween, Cinco de Mayo)
In Mexico, cut tissue paper or papel picado is a traditional decoration for Cinco de Mayo, the Day of the Dead, national holidays, weddings, funerals, and many other celebrations. These festive, brightly colored sheaths of paper hang from banners strung along balconies, across streets and buildings, homes, and squares.
In this activity, students create papel picado banners using colored tissue paper. This is a good activity for the art room, for holiday units, or to complement Spanish language

Take your students on a virtual field trip. I have created a movie from the Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection explores the Mexican modernism movement through more than 150 artworks. Gustav Klimt Inspired Portrait Painting. Overall, with 40 minute periods, this project took about a month (we had Thanksgiving break in the middle of it and half days.) This webquest centers around the students using the resources provided on the document to find and research the history of Halloween. Students are to follow the instructions and complete the worksheet. Feel free to edit the document as you see fit for your classroom (parts of mine are centered around flowers for my Floral Design class).
