Follow the Drinking Gourd - History and Sing-Along
My students love a good mystery and really love secret codes. They get so excited to learn code songs and any song for that matter where the words have a double meaning.
I use "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and an introduction to African American music and then our unit progresses to spirituals and freedom songs. My students love the stories behind the songs and enjoy sharing what they have learned about slavery in their social studies lessons. I always like to add to their background knowledge

The presentation includes a brief video from the History channel on the civil rights movement, a discussion of lynching (what it is, why it happened, where it occurred), slides about the author of the poem "Strange Fruit" (Abel Meeropol), and a video clip, lyrics, and discussion questions of the song version of the poem, popularized by Billie Holiday.

12 Days of Christmas - Listening Activity + Parody Writing
A fun activity for Christmas time. Presentation includes a brief history of the popular Christmas carol, "The 12 Days of Christmas" and two video clips of the song, one from the Muppets, and the other a more fast-paced, rock version by Relient K.
