Minecraft Area and Perimeter Project Based Learning 4.MD.3 3.MD.8

4.MD.3 - Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor. Students will plan and design the blueprint for a Minecraft village. They are also given the area or perimeter for some buildings, and will be required to figure out length and width. Use the project with basic grid

Capacity: Customary and Metric Mini Labs

These mini labs were created out of the need to teach customary and metric units of capacity in an investigative setting. Each lab was assigned to half the class for the first day and then flip flopped for the second day. By using a hands-on approach, students in my class understood how much each measure actually contains. They walked away from the investigations with a mental image that made this type of learning concrete. Remember that you cannot teach size with paper and pencil! The lab uses

How to Read Grams (g) and Kilograms (kg) on an Interactive Scale + Sample Lesson

Created by
Anna Vysochyna
This scale teaches students why sometimes we measure things in grams (g) and sometimes we measure things in kilograms (kg). There is a sample lesson that will help them better understand how to use and read a scale. The teacher can show how to use the scale then provide separate scales in Google Docs for students to play around with or to use as a tool. Made with the Ontario Education Curriculum in mind.

Micro:bit remote temperature sensor data collection with progress bar

This lesson gets temperature sensor data from the built-in sensor. The lesson uses two Micro:bits. One collects temperature data and the other receives the data. The data is collected and saved to a comma-separated value file. The code uses the Micro:bit’s radio to transmit the data. Use this to discuss how radio technology works. Radio technology uses frequencies. Frequencies are measured in amplitude and modulation. Discuss how amplitude and modulation are used to send information like music an

This task requires students to use their knowledge of fractions to place obstacles on the correct location on an obstacle course. Students must partition the number line using a ruler to help them. Students will realize that some fractions may be on the same point on a number line. This task requires students bring in their knowledge of measurement, multiplication, and division as well as fractions. (Note: Use calculator tape or other 6 foot long material as the obstacle course / number line.)

I love to use literature books in my Math classroom as often as I can! How Tall How Short How Faraway by David Adler is a great book to use when introducing the measurement systems. In the book, he discuss how ancient mathematicians used body parts to measure things. Realizing that not everyone has the same size body parts led to a universal measurement system. I created a fun activity where students use their body parts to measure themselves and look at proportional relationships in the h
