This is an experiment for a third grade teacher who is struggling to engage two dyslexic students in the process of answering mathematical story problems. She showed me a set of story problems and described how a teacher had to sit next to the students and read the problems to the students, who then solved them.

The Fast Food Challenge is to have students create an unhealthy fast food meal and then make it healthy. I have my students use the internet to find fast food menus of their favorite places. You could also go and request menus from the restaurants. This activity can take from 2 days to a week depending if you have the students work alone, in partners or groups. Buying Food - Using Coupons Project (Real World Math)

I used this to help explain cost vs benefits for the environmental issues portion of 6th grade science. Students will research the cost of a hybrid car and it's gasoline model using the Internet. This is a project that lasts as long as you want it to... I usually give my students a good 2 weeks of math period time (or extra time) to complete their business idea. This does also require a teacher or someone to "shop" at their businesses when they are ready. Then, on the last day, students get to "shop" at each others' businesses.
