False Advertisements: An Analysis of Combinations

Inspired by the lie on the famous Wendy's Bag and the claim on the great Chipotle cup, I've created a project where the kids start off by validating the claim made by Wendy's a long time ago, looking at a facebook post, and researching toppings in other states. Then, students find a new business to test whether they are mathematically accurate with their claim on the number of ways to personalize their product. Lastly, students will create an advertisement using their data and reflect upon the p

Incorporate literature into the math classroom! This article provides a mathematical perspective on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I used this as an interesting introductory activity to expose students to contemporary mathematical ideas like imaginary numbers. The file includes both snippets of the article as well as a question worksheet for students. You can also search on Google for the full article. I like showing my students a YouTube clip of the 1951 version of the m

During the recent swine flu outbreak, I had my Algebra I students analyze the growth rate of the outbreak. This activity asks you to compute linear regression, quadratic regression, and exponential regression using data from the CDC. The students then draw conclusions as to which model matches best. I would love to hear any feedback you might have. (If you use use C-Scope I used this after M&M M & M Population Simulation and Height vs. Bounce in Unit 11)
