Geometry Road Trip - Project Based Learning PBL

Follow along with Jacob and his family on their summer road trip! This project is a great end-of-the-year activity for your high school geometry students, as it reviews many topics that are taught throughout the year. It can also be broken up into the individuals tasks, to give as an end of unit assessment activity for each topic. This project is a great follow-up to many topics of geometry, including:Volume: Cones, pyramids, and cylindersCircles: Central arcs, inscribed angles, and segment len

In this project, students apply what they know about right triangle trigonometry to estimate the height of a tall object on campus. They create their own clinometer and use it to collect data. Students love getting outside to collect data, and they love working with a real-life application of these concepts! Please download the preview file for information about supplies (string, straws, and coins) and setup. You will download a .zip file from which two files (one .doc and one .xls) can be e

Bullet Trajectory -- Trigonometry - Forensics - 21st Century Math Project

An unfortunate reality in our world is that homicides happen. In order to bring justice for the victims crime scenes have to be carefully dissected to bring about evidence to find and convict a criminal. One way this happens is through a careful analysis of the blood spatter. The shape of a blood spatter tells a great deal about the angle in which it hit the ground. This can enlighten investigators when they are trying to determine the height or distance that the crime took place. In geometry or

Need a real world application to show students how useful inverses of sin, cosine, and tangent are? In this activity, students find missing angles in furniture construction designs using trig! The set includes 6 drawings with a total of 21 missing angles. Students will use their knowledge of trig ratios, inverses, and angle relationships (such as parallel lines cut by a transversal and complementary angles). Two versions are included:Large drawings showing each design on its own sheet One she

The purpose of the Quadrilateral Kite Experiment is to allow students to explore the characteristics of a quadratic kite and use those properties for flight. Students will construct a kite using wooden dowels, a plastic bag, and some string. They will conduct an experimental flight, recording their data and results. Students will then reflect on their results and the qualities of a quadratic kite that make it the choice shape for flight. They will then examine the results of others. Students wi

I like to call this activity Putt-Putt-Geometry. It is 9 glorious holes of trigonometry application! This works great as a Trig unit project, end of year project, or test review (maybe 1 or 2 holes for review). The students can work in groups, pairs, or individuals. If your students are not proficient with Trig, or you have not covered it yet, each hole can be done using the Pythagorean Theorem instead - simply tweak the directions a bit. I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do!

The Pythagorean spiral project uses the Pythagorean Theorem to create a beautiful spiral if done correctly. This can be used from Pre-Algebra all the way to graduation as a good way to teach the Pythagorean Theorem as well as constructions. Have the student decorate the spiral after to add some flare to their work! A rubric is included for easy grading.

If you are looking for a project to assign for either in class work or at home work this is it. This project should be done after students are able to set up and solve right triangle trigonometry problems, and they are familiar with angles of elevation. I worked on this assignment over the course of two days. On day 1, I had students create their own clinometers and practice using them (materials listed in resources). On day 2, we walked around the school campus together and they calculated the

This is one of my favorite projects of all time. Students make a tool to measure the angle of elevation from their eyeline and use it to measure the distance or height of things using trigonometry. I would bring students to the banks of the East River on the Brooklyn side and determine the height of the Chrystler building, or the distance to the Empire State. But you can also determine the height of the basketball hoop, the flagpole or the tallest tree on the school grounds. There are a lot
