Clinometer Project (Right Triangle Trigonometry)

In this project, students apply what they know about right triangle trigonometry to estimate the height of a tall object on campus. They create their own clinometer and use it to collect data. Students love getting outside to collect data, and they love working with a real-life application of these concepts!

You will download a .zip file from which two files (one .doc and one .xls) can be extracted.

The .doc file (editable) includes the papers students will need, along with setup information for teachers:
- teacher notes
- printable clinometer templates (2 per page)
- student paper with instructions, data table, and space for calculations

The .xls file allows teachers to quickly check students’ calculations. Teachers type student data into the yellow boxes, and the file automatically calculates what students’ answers should be.

I usually spend one 50-minute class period collecting data, and another class period letting students work on their calculations. For students who are absent on the day of data collection, a set of "fake data" is provided for a made-up flagpole.
