What educators are saying

Used in a co-taught secondary math class. Students loved the break from traditional assignments and could compare answers quickly. The visual support helped them explain the processes for each problem.

Description

PLEASE NOTE: THE PREVIEW VERSION OF THIS PRODUCT IS THE ACTUAL "STUDENT VERSION" AND DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY OF THE ANSWERS TO THE PROBLEMS. THE "TEACHER VERSION" INCLUDES DETAILED ANSWERS TO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS FOR THE PROJECT.

This project involves the use of the three (3) basic and inverse trigonometry functions (sine, cosine and tangent and their inverses) to solve nine (9) different right triangle problems. The appropriate trig functions are selected in order to calculate all missing side lengths and angle measures of the right triangles. The calculations are completed and all answers are summarized on a table and added to the triangle trig farm picture included as part of the project. Once all the calculations are complete and the values are added to the triangle trig farm picture, the figures and in-between spaces are neatly colored.

I have my Math 2 and Geometry students complete this project toward the end of the unit on trigonometry. It is an excellent way to review the basic properties of trigonometry prior to the unit testing/assessment on topic.

The table of contents for the project is as follows:

  • Part A – Project Information and Guidelines
  • Part B – General Vocabulary
  • Part C – Summary of Basic Trigonometric Functions
  • Part D – Triangle Trig Farm Work Problems and Picture
  • Appendix A – Triangle Trig Farm Calculation Summary Table
  • Appendix B – Triangle Trig Farm Picture
  • Appendix C – Grading Rubric
  • Appendix D – Triangle Trig Farm Colored Examples

Part B includes the basic vocabulary encountered in the study of right triangle basic trigonometry.

Part C includes 3 pages of review information on the basic and inverse trigonometry properties for right triangles.

Part D requires the students to determine the proper basic or inverse trig function to use to calculate all of the missing side lengths and angle measures of the nine (9) right triangles. Each triangle is provided with a unique identification number so that the calculation page can be referenced to the Triangle Trig Farm Calculation Summary Table and the Triangle Trig Farm picture.

All of the calculation work required by Part D is to be summarized on the Trig Calculation Work Boxes provided with each of the nine (9) work problems. The 3 triangle side lengths and angle measures are to be summarized on the Appendix A Triangle Trig Farm Calculation Summary Table.

Once all of the calculations have been completed and the data added to the summary table, the triangle side lengths and angle measures are added to the Triangle Trig Farm picture included with the project. The final activity involves the coloring of the Triangle Trig Farm picture.

The project can be completed by students working individually or by students working in pairs or groups to complete the project in a more timely manner. It usually takes two, 1-1/2 hour class periods to completely finish all parts of the project with students working individually; but can be completed during one (1) 90 minute class period when assigned as group work. Please note that even with group work, the final coloring may have to be completed as homework.

An example grading rubic for the project is included in Appendix C.

This project package includes both a Student Version and a Teacher Version (with complete Answer Key). Answers to each part of the project are provided in the Teacher Version. In addition 3 colored examples of the Triangle Trig Farm picutre are also included in Appendix D at the end of the project package in the Teacher Version.

Between the Teacher and Student Versions, there are 47 total pages in the package. The native MS Word files are included for both versions in the event the teacher desires to make any modifications to the project to suit her or his classroom purposes.
