I use this recipe as a lab with my middle school Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) students to practice kitchen basics- safety and sanitation, kitchen tools and equipment, measuring techniques, reading a recipe and following lab procedures! For easier clean up and transport out of the classroom, I purchase 14oz disposable microwave safe paper cups that come with lids. Students could also use microwave safe coffee mugs.

This pass is quick and easy to give kids that took longer to clean up than expected. There are 8 passes per page.I would fill out the date and sign it and the student would write their name. If I knew a student was going to have to stay late, I would write them during class to be prepared. I emailed my faculty to let them know that I would be using these passes so they would know they were from me.

Here are some lab plans I've used in the past for students who need specific job instructions. In older students, I don't give out specific instructions because they work more individually, but this is a great way to start them on division of labor in a lab. I've also included a 35 point lab evaluation, a project based lab plan, and a lab plan with a time plan included. I like to use all of the lab plans and even have students just write their own lists as they develop into more independent cook

Organize students' knife cuts practice with this knife cuts placemat template!I print these out and the students use them as a guide while they practice various knife cuts. They save their best 2 for each of the knife cuts and place them in the appropriate squares. Muffins are a great lab for quickbreads to emphasize gentle mixing and compare it with muffins that may be overmixed. You could do the basic muffin batter and overmix it for a demonstration of overmixing vs. gentle mixing and look at the results in class before the lab. I love the variations for students to make them more unique. It's a small recipe so you could save money, but could be easily doubled and then make it a math exercise as well.

This is a 7 day petri dish observation that students may complete. I made this for my Family Consumer Sciences class to teach them how quickly bacteria can grow in the lab. Students may record and draw what they notice each day the bacteria is growing. This will allow the students to later compare and contrast their findings.
