I took a classical song, written by Franz Haydn(1732-1809) and turned it into a wonderful game about sound and silence! Children will tip-toe,wiggle, jump and gallop to the beautiful music and then FREEZE! on the silences. Great way to teach them about rests. My Beach Ball
This is a silly song to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean." My class usually plays this game in a large circle rolling a beach ball. Write letters, word family words, sight words, numbers or math facts on the beach ball. Play the song then pause it. The child holding the beach ball when the song stops has to read the word or solve the problem under his/her right hand. Much more fun than flash cards.

You can go around a circle in multiple configurations such as ones, two's, three's etc. This 12/8 song makes it fun and requires some organization in order to avoid chaos. Try it with K and 1st graders and see what I mean. 2nd and third graders seem to have it under their belts. Have fun!

Act out the animals in each of the verses. Clap your hands during the chorus. Change the actions in the chorus; e.g. stomp your feet, bounce around, swing your arms, tap your toes, etc. Feel how the verses are smooth and gentle and the choruses are bouncy and energetic.

Wintertime
A music and movement activity describing animals' behavior in the wintertime, as well as giving an example of the contrast between quiet/loud (piano/forte) music and jumpy/smooth (staccato/legato) music. The children pretend to sleep during the quiet chorus, and then pretend to be the various animals during the verses. Make sure to encourage loud bear snores in the last verse!
