I did not include a key for either of these card sorts. In many cases, it depends on the level of the anlaysis the students are thinking at. I am more interested in the text evidence and explanation they give for their sorting. This card sort includes 2 levels of determining direct versus indirect characterization. Level one is simple direct and indirect. Level 2 looks more specifically at how the characterization was developed: action, affect, thoughts, words...

I have created a reading log system that will work for 4th grade and up. I have always had my students keep track of the books they are reading. Then all the summary sheets are added to the folder as the students complete the books. The RC on the reading log stands for Reading Counts quiz or AR test. The students fill out the form each time they finish a book. They love to receive this form at the end of the year to show-off how much they read. It's also a great reference for you.

Importance of learning English language arts

English language arts (ELA) concepts — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — empower students to become effective communicators, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. They are the foundation for all other types of learning as students must rely on ELA skills to master content from other subject areas and communicate what they’ve learned.

Strong reading skills can help students make sense of written content, and gather information for further analysis. Writing skills can help students articulate their ideas, construct arguments, and synthesize information. And speaking and listening skills empower students to clearly present their ideas, participate in group discussions, and collaborate with their classmates. This is why teaching English language arts is critically important for student’s success in school and beyond.

Benefits of learning English language arts
