6th grade Shopping Activity (Tax, Tips, Discounts)
This lesson is designed to take from 1-2 days (depending on length of class periods) My students had studied discounts, tips, tax for about a week in preperation for this activity. I wrote this rhyme to help second and third-graders memorize their doubles facts. While they often could double 1-5 with ease, they tended to get mixed up with the products of 6, 7, 8 and 9 when multiplied by two. After "singing" this enough times, I could hear my students whispering the lines to themselves when doing computations! Eventually, as with anything that we memorize, they needed to refer to the rhyme less and less, and eventually it was committed to memory.

Vertical Number Line-Bridge to 10 (Basic Subtraction)
This vertical number line is used to help students visualize how to "Bridge to 10" or "Make a 10" when subtracting two 1 digit numbers.
The focus is finding the "difference" between 2 numbers as opposed to the idea of "taking away".
I printed this on colored paper and laminated them for my students to use with dry erase markers.
