6th grade Shopping Activity (Tax, Tips, Discounts)

Created by
Matthew Duraj
This lesson is designed to take from 1-2 days (depending on length of class periods) My students had studied discounts, tips, tax for about a week in preperation for this activity. I had students work in groups of 3-4 to allow for collaboration and discussion amongst each other. This was helpful when many students had similar questions. I set up four "stores" around the room. I printed out signs to designate each one and also printed out the weekly ad for each store (taken off of the inte

Doubles Song / Doubling Rhyme / Multiplication / Two Times Table

I wrote this rhyme to help second and third-graders memorize their doubles facts. While they often could double 1-5 with ease, they tended to get mixed up with the products of 6, 7, 8 and 9 when multiplied by two. After "singing" this enough times, I could hear my students whispering the lines to themselves when doing computations! Eventually, as with anything that we memorize, they needed to refer to the rhyme less and less, and eventually it was committed to memory. I recommend writing it out

Vertical Number Line-Bridge to 10 (Basic Subtraction)

This vertical number line is used to help students visualize how to "Bridge to 10" or "Make a 10" when subtracting two 1 digit numbers. The focus is finding the "difference" between 2 numbers as opposed to the idea of "taking away". I printed this on colored paper and laminated them for my students to use with dry erase markers. Example: 13 - 8 = ________ *Start at the smaller number (8) on the vertical number line. How many does it take to "Make a 10"? (Answer: 2). Write the number "2".

Students can work in pairs or groups to figure out how to add the least amount of coins together to get to the value they drew from a pile of cards. The cards have values each under $1.00. This activity can be modified according to the teachers needs. Students will have to already know or have an understanding of the values of each coin and conversions between the values (e.g. 5 pennies

This activity is beneficial for students as they are able to manipulate objects and visually see how to solve a doubles plus 1 or doubles plus 2 basic addition problem. You will need small manipulatives (I use centimeter cubes) to place in each circle. This is to be used with the Doubles Plus 1-2 Practice Activity Worksheet. Example: 8 + 9 = ____________ *Students will place 8 cubes in the first big circle and the same amount of cubes (because the circles are the same BIG size) in the second
