Mixtures and Solutions using trail mix and kool aid- great for ESE
Students will create their own trail mix and kool-aid to demonstrate the difference between mixtures and special types of mixtures called solutions. I teach in a special-ed classroom and utilizing their measuring skills, and involving their taste buds make it easier for them to make a connection to the content.

Distances in Solar System and Universe
This is a two for one activity set. Both of them involve taking distances in space and scaling them down to sizes observable on Earth. The first activity calculates sizes of the planets based on shrinking the Earth down to a 1cm diameter and then showing the spacing of the planets on a football field. The students will also calculate the mass distribution in the solar system between the planets and the sun. The second activity takes distances in the universe and scales them down to the Earth.

Lab: Testing the Activity Series
This is a multiple concepts lab that has a lot of 'wow' factor for students as metals disappear and new ones appear. It is in miniscale so you that don't use that much of your chemicals. For 250 students, I generally use up: 20 g Fe, three 12"x12" sheets of Al foil, 12" of Mg ribbon, 20g Zn powder, and 200 ml of 1M CuSO4 solution. Equipment: large test tubes, 0.001 accuracy balance, long glass thermometer, small beaker, graduated cylinder, timer (or let them use cell phones)

Skittles Proportion Activity
Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags.
I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.

NO PREP Need a Lab Quick! -- Porosity of Soil (needs only dirt, water, cups)
This is a simple lab/worksheet that measures porosity of soil. The advantage? The materials are free and easy to obtain. All you need is dirt, some measureable containers (like a beakers or measuring cups), and water.
The initial discussion question is about the advantage that soil has over human made pavement when it comes to flooding or runoff. This lab would be a good kickstart to a lesson about flooding, permeable pavers, and other human solutions to flooding.
