Middle School/Upper Elementary Scientific Method and STEM Fair Unit
This unit was designed as a way to incorporate STEM into a more traditional Science Fair model with connections to STEM careers. Students are encouraged to choose a topic that they are deeply interested in and they learn how to connect scientific thinking to concepts outside of science class. Observing Live Cricket Lab
This is an engaging lab that involves live crickets. The students often rank this lab as one of their favorites in my Zoology class. The lab goes over ecological systems (they create a food web with a cricket in it) and highlights animal behavior. It is developed for a college prep high school course but could be modified for upper elementary/middle school level. It could be used to teach the Scientific Method.

In their paper, they must describe the career and how it's a STEM career, and then they must explain how five of the 16 Habits of Mind (identified by Costa & Kallick) relate specifically to the career.
