The following is an activity in which students explore various songs which were direct results and/or responses to the conflict in Vietnam. Students are provided with the lyrics to the following four songs:- "For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield- "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young- "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye- "Ballad of the Green Berets" by Staff Sergeant Barry SadlerInstructions are for the teacher to play the songs while the students listen to the songs and read the lyric

This powerpoint summarizes the story of Jamestown, the first English colony. My students love reading along and clicking through the colorful pictures illustrating the story.
The words are lyrics to accompany the song Jamestown, Virginia by Classroom Classics, but the powerpoint can be used with or without the music.

Civilization GRAPES Independent Study Project
This project can be used to examine any civilization using the organizer GRAPES (geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics, social structure.)
Students research each area and then have a choice of creative follow-up tasks for each one (lots of art, creative writing, etc. To culminate their work, students will create a slideshow presentation about each area of GRAPES.

Do we benefit from slavery today, as the North did in the 1800s?
This is a powerful lesson for students to see a modern connection to the past.Before this lesson, you should discuss with students how the North was complicit in slavery as much as the South was in the years prior to the Civil War. Northerners profited greatly off the backs of slave labor, whether they would have wanted to admit it or not. We Didn't Start the Fire
I use this checklist for "We Didn't Start the Fire" as an introduction to the Cold War. I have students go through and check off events/people/etc. that they recognize while watching the music video for Billy Joel's song. I use the video that has images with each item on the list.
