7 Deadly Sins of Poetry

The concept of the “7 Deadly Sins” of poetry is adapted from Stephen Minot’s idea from Three Genres. This introduction of the poetry unit should be paired with the first "Poetry Freewrite." After the first freewrite in the Poetry Unit, it will usually come out that the students don’t like poetry. I usually relate to them, explaining how I hated poetry in high school, and it’s because I thought all the same things they did. Essentially those are poetry stereotypes that come with historical works.
