"Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou Four Column Notes and Close Read
These four column notes and close read questions emphasize mood, tone, and theme throughout the poem. The assignment first asks students to find the examples of different literary devices and to discuss what the author's purpose is in using those devices. The assignment then asks the student to expand their thoughts further with a close read that places an emphasis on theme.

This is an activity that allows students to work together. It is focused around the short story "The Circuit." It can be incorporated in a unit of similar themes, characters, or stories. The story is included. I used this as a pre-reading exercise. I have students to complete the questions before reading the story. There is a word search with key at end of lesson - this is usually how I start the lesson. The key to the word search also includes definitions. The activity could take 1-3 days
